Trump officials accidentally text Atlantic journalist about military strikes in apparent security breach

The Atlantic's editor-in-chief was inadvertently included on a messaging chain of senior Trump officials that discussed plans for a forthcoming strike on the Houthis in Yemen.

Jeffrey Goldberg penned a first-person account of getting a connection request from what appeared to be Trump's National Security Advisor Michael Waltz on March 11 on Signal, a popular encrypted messaging service used by journalists and government officials. He accepted and was then added to a chat group called "Houthi PC Small Group," where he proceeded to see a series of top Trump officials discuss what turned out to be an upcoming attack on the Houthis, in what critics are calling a massive breach of national security.

Goldberg laid out how 18 members were listed in the group, including Waltz, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. What ensued in the following days was a discussion about attacking the Houthis, an Iran-backed terrorist group that's wreaked havoc on ships in the Red Sea and disrupted traffic through the critical Suez Canal.

The principals in the chat raised various concerns about the timing of the strikes, whether it was prudent to wait, and the security of the operation. Vance's account expressed skepticism about the attack, saying at one point he thought it was a mistake, and at another saying, "I just hate bailing Europe out again," alluding to European trade having far more skin in the game with the Suez Canal than the United States.

The following day, according to Goldberg, Hegseth posted highly sensitive information in the chat with operational details of future strikes. Goldberg said he would not print them, but he claimed an adversary with access to what was written could have harmed U.S. military or intelligence officials abroad. Goldberg said he learned the timing of the Yemen strikes on March 15 from the Signal posts.

Sounds like it was too easy for that to happen. This app shouldn’t be so responsive to slippery fingers . And if I were Trump I would seriously be grilling Waltz (aide?) why this junk journalist was in his phone (contacts?) Weird.
It supposedly was a "glitch", but a glitch would apply to a technical problem.
This was a major "mistake" by Waltz's staffer from what's been reported.
The screenshots of the texts in the chat have been published to the public. The White House has said it's authentic and it's being investigated further
I think while the investigation is in progress, that staffer should be placed on temporary leave until it's cleared up because it's a valid question, why did he have a leftist journalist in his phone contacts?
I'm also wondering how a staffer is allowed to have access to this encrypted chat that's supposed to be exclusively for certain security department heads.
A staffer can be just someone that runs errands. I'm sure the staffer has to have a security clearance to be an assistant to Waltz, but that doesn't mean this person is authorized to be part of a discussion that has sensitive information.
I do hope Trump's security team makes sure this doesn't happen again. Trump can't be everywhere babysitting his Cabinet members or those working for the White House.

Lord, deliver the President and Cabinet from the snare of the Fowler and from the enemies traps, I pray in Jesus' name.
Amen 🙏
Yes. President Trump needs our prayers. The devil doesn't rest from creating chaos and disruption because that's his way to divide, and remember what Jesus said,
"a house divided cannot stand".
So we do need to pray for our President that God keep His Direction and Hand in this government in how this Administration is running it, in a free and an orderly run manner, so that God's will be done in what we are Called to do in the Commission to get the gospel out, until God says to Jesus, "Go get your Bride". 🙏

It doesn't need to be addressed publicly. It has likely already been appropriately addressed.
You're quoting from my post yesterday morning. Later in the day yesterday I read when the screenshots of the texts were made public it was being addressed.
I also read that Musk is assisting with the investigation technologically since the chat invite was done through a tech. device.

I would like to see that staffer fired for his mistake.
Addressing it can begin there.
If we look over the past ten years or so, there have been so many deliberate ‘mistakes’ that were overlooked. There is Obama cutting a deal with Putin on a hot microphone, he spied on Trump, Benghazi, Hilary, Afghanistan, Fauci, Hunter B., funding Hamas, etc.

I think we need to start with those. Then we can be outraged over this mistake.

I'd be more interested in seeing justice service to the den of thieves we call Congress, many of whom have been enriching themselves off the backs of the American tax payer.
Exactly

The dems use media to draw us toward a straw man outrage. Then we all feel vindicated when the staffer is fired…as the media signals to us that now justice has been served and they lull us back to sleep.

I'm not outraged over it. And every administration has had issues in them. Every mistake or deliberate problem should be taken care of. Left or right. The problem comes when an error is dismissed as if it's nothing. As Margery pointed out in her post #28 it shouldn't have been dismissed by the White House.
It should have been acknowledged as a problem from the one who made the mistake as well as express concerns about that journalist's bias as a leftist Trump hater. Both things were wrong. I don't put all of the blame on the staffer but he is the one who caused what "could have been" a threat to the operation with Yemen but thank God it didn't happen that way.
I'm glad the Administration is working on taking care of this. No one got hurt. It's a lesson learned and can make better secure measures for future conversations among the departments heads

Don't believe everything the news tells us, whether it be a libtard rag or a more conserative one. The so-called conservative news sites aren't beneath exaggerations and whatnot to make their articles more sensationalist. I mostly avoid those latter sites too since I find most of their headlines misleading and a lot of their content not credible.

Every day on this site I click on new threads with interesting headlines only to learn that the headlines are often misleading (not true). Those are very often from more conservative sites and is a big reason why I don't trust those either.
Agree. Discernment is needed, not just biblically, but not posting false stories from questionable sites, which are often click bait.

As this story is still in the news, not everyone is gonna think this is sound. lol. Just saying up front. Plus with the added warning of sources. But thinking back to Trump 45, he was pretty skilled at baiting Dems on Twitter. Like toying, trolling was a theme for him. The judge assigned to the case of course is magically Boasberg. Connected to delaying Hilary Clinton email release until after the 2016 election. Blocked Trump from departing violent gang members. At the same time, Boasberg is connected to Clinton, Roberts, FISA...and by now everyone knows his name. Trump, meanwhile is declassifying Crossfire Hurricane (which Boasberg is kinda embroiled in all of that too).

So its not outside the spectrum of consideration. Boasberg's 4th Trump case? Trump, lauds this as statistically impossibe not to be rigged, on Truth Social. Lets look at this from a case study perspective:

  • 13 Troops Killed in Afghanistan -- no one fired
  • Gen Miley stated he would tell China ahead of time if US was planning to attack -- no media push back
  • The Signal App was a creation of Obama/Biden -- Used during Crossfire Hurricane to talk stink about Trump because it was encrypted / A deep state player app
  • Same app used right before Trump congressional confirmation hearings (with intent to remove current placements in the cabinet)
  • Goldberg, the Atlantic reporter added by mistake -- to leak (someone from Trump's staff invited Goldberg)
  • Reporter from the Atlantic -- Why would he continue to listen if it would be discovered it was classified?

...to me, this has "set-up" written all over it. But of course. And since the Trump admin knows this, would it be considered that far out to consider the following:

* If Trump meant to go after the deep state in 2016 comapaign & came back in 2024 against all odds, would it not stand to reason that this sort of game theory of how the deep state operates not be used to set "them" up too? Because it kind of looks like that. Just saying.

I would not be surprised if this is kind of a "go" s I g n a l to embroil certain players into the cue for deeper "exposure" comapaign. My general sense about this period in time is that what this administration is about is not just about getting into office to better the country, but to secure for decades (seeing how infested it has become with globalist operatives like all over the place riddled throughout). So if that is noticeable by Trump admin 47, it would seem almost impossible this not be an avenue to yet once again turn tables on the deep state players. Its kind of becoming the job of Trum Admin 47. And if it is, it seems to build its progress upon natural outflow bringing the spotlight heavy upon the deep state to bring American citizens onboard. Without the citizens, there would be little success. America has to want it. Is what this seems to me.

Blessings

Reporter invited to app was thick Trump rival and clearly interested in making things up

Other Goldberg backdrop

Im surprised this story still has legs on this forum.
The good thing about that though is that my suspicion is that, as ironic as this may sound, because of the declassification of Crossfire Hurricane recently, this would seem to have a bit of import related. And having the dems bring it up, for optics, is crucial. It would seem that Signal is a favored device by the deep state. So perhaps a way to introduce decommissioning its use is also in vew.

Laura Loomer has some theories that are interesting. The more concrete one is posted by the NY Post.

In my understanding, what i would imagine goes with this administration is certain ways to have dems call things into question, that ultimately won't end well for them. This looks like one of them. Hard to see exactly at the moment. But, to me, has the earmarks. So if true, its actually good it has legs. Because I would see bringing things to the surface be a thing to look for in Trump 47 admin practice in general. Or at least a consideration of perhaps how to view some developing stories.

Blessings.

Yes. Me too. Certainly we spend a lot more time discussing secular events than God's Word and even testimonies. Just check out the number of posts and responses in the Bible Study and related forums, including in the worship and encouragement rooms as compared to the News and Anything Goes areas. I'm glad to see all those secular areas flourishing, but surprised that the Bible ones ge a lot less attention.

I noted that awhile back.

Im a numbers geek, and the games and fellowship threads/posts, dwarf the posts on Christian/bible posts.

I can fix it for y'all, by rolling in, quoting a bunch of scripture and sending us all on a rabbit trail to some Bible passage it reminds me of and maybe a tale of a relative or friend that I knew that had a security breach. If I attach enough scripture to it, I can derail ANYTHING AND get a bit o' Bible in here!!! Offer stands. But probably none of my beeswax.
