A phone call between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, which was initially reported as showing the two leaders were on the same page, was actually marked with heated disagreements over Iran, according to a Channel 12 report.
The conversation between the two leaders was reported to have focused on what the two leaders agreed on, namely, that Iran should never obtain a nuclear weapon.
However, reports since then have emphasized the sharp disagreements between Trump and Netanyahu, with the former emphasizing that a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear threat is a likely and preferable way to deal with the problem.
Trump reportedly told Netanyahu, “I want a diplomatic solution with the Iranians. I believe in my ability to make a good deal.” He also said he could make a deal that would benefit both sides.
The news of the acrimonious call comes to light as US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visits Israel to meet with Netanyahu and Israeli officials.
Noem told Fox News, “President Trump specifically sent me here to speak with the prime minister about how negotiations are going and how important it is that we stay united and let this process play out.”
She characterized the talks with Netanyahu as “very candid,” possibly hinting at conflict.
