Trump Administration Cuts $400M to Columbia Over Antisemitism

From X:
On March 7, 2025, the Trump administration canceled approximately $400 million in federal funding for Columbia University, citing the institution's failure to adequately address antisemitic activities on campus. The decision was part of broader efforts by the administration to combat antisemitism in educational settings, with investigations launched into other universities. Columbia University's response to the situation has not been detailed in the provided information, but reactions from political figures and the public have been mixed.

That's good, but why are we giving that king of money to a University, anyway?
Agreed.

If they are truly producing a product (higher ed) then the consumer of the product should pay according to the worth of the product.

It's been my beef all along with university education up here in Canada. When people are forced to pay the full cost, without subsidies, suddenly the quality of the product would have to improve, and the competition from trade schools and colleges would start to hurt.

Columbia University's annual operating budget is 6.6 billion dollars. That's billion. With a B. That's the size of their annual endowment. I wonder how much a 400 million dollar cut will hurt them?

That said, I greatly applaud President Trump for removing their federal funding.

Since apparently the reason the university heads will not discipline the rioting students is that they do not want to upset the parents and alumni who give them more than 6 billion dollars each year, I am hoping President Trump's administration will step in and enforce American law on the University grounds by entering, arresting, and prosecuting all students and (I believe) non-students involved. And all who are not Americans should have their visa revoked and be escorted out of this country, never to return.

Research grants and assistance with public safety efforts. Probably other stuff.

College campuses have always been unsafe places, especially for women. Parents and potential students aren't told this, and the young ladies end up suffering. Last statistics I saw, over a quarter of women end up quitting and not graduating due to sexual assault/rape. Universities try to cover it up and "address" it internally in many different ways, but especially when the perpetrator(s) are connected to money and/or sports. Alcohol and date rape drugs play a huge part in what happens. Anymore, one even needs to be careful with food and non-alcoholic beverages in the cafeteria.

And it's not just men roofying the women. Now, women will roofy another woman and call it funny. The unspoken, assumed sisterhood of all women that used to watch out for one another now preys on one another.

It’s controversial, but there’s some who want to see the endowment billions taxed. Most universities are not serving a public interest as they operate as non-profits.

I think those should be taxed as well as the untaxed money that people convert to non-profit trusts/foundations. That would close the loophole that the mega-wealthy use to avoid taxation on their billions.
