My first reaction was a knee jerk: some people should just not be parents. But then I realized they think they are doing what every good parent should-- helping their children. The problem is that they have no basis upon which to decide what is good or bad. Their foundation is that which their social, political spiritual (such as it may be) environment tells them is good. Unfortunately for them, the ideas of men are fluctuating and flawed. Societal norms are impermanent. And if you doubt that, take a look at how different American norms are today compared to just a generation ago.
I cannot fault these parents for their actions in regards to their children when they lack God's own instructions that would enable them to make truly wise decisions for their children. I can fault them, however, for their ignorance and perhaps rejection of God's Word. But at the same time I must fault the Church. We have not done a good job presenting the case for Christ to the world. In fact, in many churches I am familiar with, the members are either indistinguishable from those in the world around them or have separated themselves from them to such a degree that they have nothing to do with them. What happened to the idea that we should be salt and light in the world? What happened to the love of God that we should be sharing with those among whom we live?
I got in these last days that those of us who gather here will seriously ask God to inspire us to truly love others as He loves them and be willing to become witnesses for Him and His salvation.
