And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest: And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it. And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD. (Lev. 23:9-12)
When the harvest was ready, the first sheaf was cut off, and brought to the Tabernacle or Temple. Since no work was allowed on the Shabbath, the sheaf had to be cut of on a Thursday or Friday, and laid to rest in a storeroom.
Then, early on the Sunday, the day after the Shabbath, the sheaf would be taken from it's resting place, and given to the Priest, who would wave it, up and down, for the Lord, as an offering for the people, to be acceptable for God.
Up and down, and up and down, the sheaf would go.
Our Lord Jesus was the embodiment of the Firstfruit of the harvest. He was cut off before the Shabbath, laid to rest, and was risen on the Sunday.
But the waving of the sheaf shows us even more: Jesus, Who IS the Bread of Life, came down from Heaven, was raised on a cross, went down in hell, was raised from the grave and ascended to heaven. From there He will come down again, pull us up, and will come down for the last time, when he will set His feet on the Mount of Olives.
He was and is the "He Lamb without blemish".
Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Maranatha.
