The Floods in Spain

The rains in Spain are not mainly on the plain...

In recent days, the region of Valencia in eastern Spain has been hit by the deadliest floods in decades, with a death toll of at least 158 people. The disaster has been described as one of the worst storm-related disasters in Europe in over five decades.

It has been widely reported that on Tuesday, a year’s worth of rain fell in just eight hours in parts of the Valencia region, triggering catastrophic flash flooding. The torrential rains caused rivers to burst their banks, sweeping away bridges, railways, and cars and turning village streets into rivers.

The Independent reported that “fresh red weather warnings for rain have prompted fears of further flooding in Spain [today].” But reports from the ground are that there has been no rain and the water has appeared from seemingly nowhere, leading people to question what’s happening.

This looks like a case where communities formed in areas that are low lying so it rains in the area and the water from all around headed towards the lower elevations, along with a lot of mud and debris.

Spain to Send 10,000 Soldiers and Police to Valencia after Deadly Floods

MADRID (AP) – Spain is sending 5,000 more soldiers and 5,000 more police to the eastern region of Valencia after deadly floods this week that killed more than 200 people, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced Saturday.

So far, 205 bodies have been recovered – 202 in Valencia, two in neighboring Castilla La Mancha and one in Andalusia, in the south – in Spain´s deadliest natural disaster in living memory.

Rescuers were still searching for bodies in stranded cars and sodden buildings on Saturday, four days after the monstrous flash floods that swept away everything in their path in the east of Spain. An unknown number of people remain missing.

Thousands of volunteers are helping to clean up the thick mud that is covering everything in streets, houses and businesses in the hardest-hit towns.
