'The day has come': ICC seeks arrests of Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas chiefs

Almost Heaven

Well-known
The International Criminal Court wants to issue arrest warrants for top Hamas leaders — as well as for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant — on charges of crimes against humanity in the Gaza war, its Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan announced Monday, on the 227th day of the Gaza war.

“My Office seeks to charge two of those most responsible, Netanyahu and Gallant, both as co-perpetrators and as superiors,” Khan stated.

Warrants would also be sought for Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and Mohammed Deif, Khan said as he demanded the release of the remaining 128 hostages in Gaza.

Khan first spoke of asking the pre-trial chamber to approve the issuance of arrest warrants in an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour. He then published a video and text statement from his office.

His words put an end to the speculation as to whether the Khan’s office would seek such warrants, a step that the ICC's pre-trial chamber must still approve.

Netanyahu is the first Israeli leader and the only head of a democratic country ever to face the threat of ICC arrest. He is now likely to join the small ranks of world leaders the ICC has marked as international pariahs such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, former Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, and former Libyan President Muammar Gadaffi.

A couple of responses to the forthcoming warrrants...

Netanyahu calls ICC arrest warrant request a 'scandal'; 'This will not stop us'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday at the Likud faction meeting said of the decision of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague to request that arrest warrants be issued against him and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant that the move is a "scandal." Netanyahu told his party members that "this will not stop me or us.

Biden calls ICC arrest warrant applications for Israeli leaders 'outrageous'

The International Criminal Court prosecutor's application for arrest warrants for Israeli leaders is "outrageous," President Biden said on Monday. "And let me be clear: whatever this prosecutor might imply, there is no equivalence - none - between Israel and Hamas," Biden said in a statement.

London hurries to publish an objection to the joke of "The Hague" and the Muslim "prosecutor":
The British Foreign Ministry: "The Hague Tribunal has no jurisdiction in this case, since Israel is not a signatory to the Rome Convention, and the Palestinians are not a state. We oppose the prosecutor's decision."

Isaac Herzog, the Israeli President just tweeted:

“The announcement of the prosecutor at the ICC is beyond outrageous, and shows the extent to which the international judicial system is in danger of collapsing.
Taken in bad faith, this one-sided move represents a unilateral political step that emboldens terrorists around the world, and violates all the basic rules of the court according to the principle of complementarity and other legal norms.
Hamas’ leaders are oppressive dictators guilty of launching mass murder, mass rape, and mass kidnappings of men, women, children and babies.
Any attempt to draw parallels between these atrocious terrorists and a democratically elected government of Israel - working to fulfill its duty to defend and protect its citizens entirely in adherence to the principles of international law – is outrageous and cannot be excepted by anyone.
We will not forget who started this war, and who raped, butchered, burned, brutalized, and kidnapped innocent citizens and families.
We will not forget our hostages whose safe return should be the main concern of the international community.
We expect all leaders in the free world to condemn outright this step and firmly reject it!”

President of the United States Biden: "The request for an order is scandalous, there is no room for comparison with Hamas and we will stand by Israel when it defends itself."
