Technology

Something funny I think about every now and then is how if we just shut down these devices we all seem to be glued to, the rulers of darkness would literally have no power over us. Unfortunately, the technology they unleashed on humanity hit us like a freight train and we have basically fully integrated with it now. It's just another example how technology in the name of "convenience" really messed this world up.

Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for all the like minded people I've become friends with through social media and yes, our devices can be very helpful and used for good, but I would go back to having no cell phones or computers in a heartbeat. I feel very blessed to have experienced the world before all of this technology took over and I can honestly say, without a doubt, that I felt much more connected to the people around me...which is super ironic. Everything feels so surface level these days as far as connections go and everyone seems so distracted.

If you really stop and think about it, it's absolutely insane how much life has changed since the year 2000, when cell phones and the internet started to become really popular and used in every day life.

If you want to be really connected with others, one needs to go back before television. Television changed the world overnight, and not in a good way.
I have a TV, a Smart TV.
I haven't used it for three years.
When I decided to give it up it didn't take long for me to see that it was something I can live without.
Television has changed since I was growing up.
I remember Lucy and Ricky having twin beds because they didn't want to give the impression that they slept together even though they were married, both on the show and in real life.
Now, nothing but.....
Let me just say there's nothing worth watching on TV these days, and I can do without it.
My cell phone now, I use it often and I have admitted my addiction to it and have had to pray about setting it aside and not picking it up and have more quality time with my God.
Indeed convenience has created a generation of lazy people who don't know how to engage personally with loved ones because their heads are buried in their electronics.
I have to tap my grandson at the dinner table when I see him in his mobile phone during mealtime. But to him, it's normal and doesn't see it as a problem, while there's no engaging in conversation with the family, because all he can see and hear is a screen with his favorite YouTuber. 😕

I don't know if I've talked about this before but while in Colombia I saw electricity come to a region. Those that could purchased televisions. There was an instantaneous change. As I walked down the road instead of always running out to wave me in to spend some time with them, it was as if there was no one home. Walk in the front door and all the occupants of the house are glued to the television. They don't even acknowledge my arrival. They're watching a telenovela (soap opera) in the middle of the day.

I'm sure the same overnight change occurred in the USA and the rest of the world as well as people secured televisions.

Sad thing about getting attached to technology is that nowadays people are willing to really get attached and merge with technology and be trans humans.
The predictive programming for it started a long time ago with the production of Comic Books, Movies, and Cartoons that were based on this. It conditioned an entire generation to be acceptable to the idea of merging humans with machine.

Ditto regular phones.

I remember using a party line at my Maternal Grandparents' house. They only had it for emergencies, as in calling an operator to get an ambulance, police, or fire department, or call a family member if they needed help immediately. It wasn't that long before I was born that every call in that town went through the operator because they didn't have a switch.

When I was little, those Grandparents didn't have a TV, so we listened to the radio. Or didn't and played Crokinole, Rook, etc. or did chores.

My Paternal Grandparents had a cabin that had no phone. If we needed help, we had to drive (or walk if a kid) a couple of miles to the closest house, and they didn't have a phone, either. The closest phone was at the gas station, and that was many miles away. But the owners lived there, so if it was an emergency, you could wake them up and they'd open the gas station so you could use the phone (free). They'd also open in the middle of the night if someone needed gas, diesel, or kerosene.

I bet a bad change happened when people didn't go to the telegraph office/town bulletin board/church bulletin board/buy a newspaper at the news stand (or read the free one posted for everyone to see) to read the news and talk with their neighbors in person about it (and see facial expressions/body language). And have on-the-spot Pastoral input if Pastor was there.

Thinking back after leaving home, I lived a simple life. I had a clean home but modestly furnished home, and never had an interest in pursuing the latest in technology.
Out of everyone I personally knew in family and friends at that time, it seemed that I was always last to get my hands on things they all got as soon as they were in market.
I think I must have bought a VHS video recorder/player like 4 years after it was in the stores.
I didn't have a mobile phone for several years after they became popular. And I held onto my Razor Flip phone for a long time because I just didn't have interest in having a "smart" phone. I still remember taking the longest time to send a text message from my flip phone tapping each letter one at a time.
I think my first smart phone was in 2017 and I have been frustrated having a phone ever since because of all the glitches my smartphones have had. I learned that smartphones are not so smart lol. And that annoying autocorrect I can do without it.
I've never had a laptop or desktop computer. I've used someone else's if I had to.
I have a Tablet that I got as a gift from my grandson four years ago that I may have used less than a dozen times and had been in a drawer for the past two years and haven't missed it.
I got my first Smart TV in 2016 as a Christmas gift from my daughter. I still have it, but I haven't used it for 3 years now as I lost interest in watching TV, and it sits on my table in my living room with a dark screen and I don't miss it at all.
If I can say there's any one thing out of technology that I have utilized and often aside from my cellphone, that I'm using now to make this post, it's my microwave oven. I love my microwave oven.
I guess I am a simple person and I can be content without technology.
Some of it can be useful and certainly convenient, but what makes it easy for me to do without it is coming from a generation when life was much more simple, and I grew up working with my hands, playing make believe, and personal interaction with other kids, and oh how fun to make mud pies and feed them to my dolls that never complained about those mud pies, lol.
I appreciated doing things myself, and putting myself into things I would do rather than it being done for me just came with a rewarding satisfaction that I just couldn't have out of something getting it done for me.
I also experienced a time that all I had was a few clothes items and a few necessities that I had when I became homeless for about a month and having basically nothing in personal possessions is what opened my eyes to how much I really have and could never lose, my Awesome God.
Unbelievably being homeless was the best thing that had ever happened to me because from that time forward God only got Bigger and Bigger to me and for me in some of the most amazing ways.
Sorry, I just realized that I'm on the Technology forum lol 🤣

You're not alone in being a sort of luddite

I got my first personal cell phone in 1999 and my first smartphone in 2023. I was "forced" into it by "needing" to verify my identity with the bank or phone company and not being able to open a text at the same time as I was on a phone call with the force-fed non-smart flip. I kept my 3G flip until almost the last minute when they went to 5G. I hate not having a removable microSD card because it takes so much longer to move pix to the computer. And .gov/BIGTech knows everything on my phone because electronic transfer (bluetooth, download, update, etc.).

I inherited Dad's smart TV when he died in 2023, but I kept my analog TV (with converter box and rabbit ears) for in the bedroom in case I'm sick or hurt and want to watch a DVD.

The apartment has a mw oven, but I only use it to store splatter screens to help keep the old technology stove cleaner

The technological kitchen gadget that I especially like is my breadmaker :)
My little netbook and the internet make Bible study more efficient (search function and highlight-copy-paste), but I might be retaining less because I'm not writing stuff down :( The cell phone allows me to carry multiple versions of the Bible and hymnals to church in a very small package that are easy to use in a pew :)
