Super Hornet Assigned to USS Harry S. Truman Lost at Sea

An F/-18E Super Hornet assigned to the carrier air wing embarked aboard aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) was lost at sea during a towing incident in the hangar bay Monday, according to a Navy announcement.
The single-seat Super Hornet assigned to the “Knight Hawks” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 136, “was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft and tow tractor were lost overboard,” reads the statement.
“Sailors towing the aircraft took immediate action to move clear of the aircraft before it fell overboard. An investigation is underway."

No personnel were lost and one sailor sustained minor injuries, according to the service.

Since March 15, Carrier Air Wing 1 flying from Truman has been engaged in ongoing strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen as part of Operation Rough Rider, according to U.S. Central Command. The carrier has been operating in the Red Sea since late February after emergency repairs following a collision with a merchant vessel. The collision resulted in the removal of Truman’s then commander. Late last year, Truman escort USS Gettysburg (CG-64) shot down an F/A-18F assigned to Carrier Air Wing 1 during an attempted landing on the carrier.

Investigation will likely conclude errors made by the crew, in how the aircraft was rigged, or the speed of the tow tractor. Carriers typically don’t pitch that hard unless in high and rough seas, in which case they would not be moving aircraft. Also, could be mechanical failure in the tow tractor.

Good news - no serious injuries!

Second F/A-18 Super Hornet Lost in Red Sea from USS Harry S. Truman — Major Setback for U.S. Navy in Just Over a Week

Another multimillion-dollar F/A-18 Super Hornet has been lost from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, marking the second such catastrophic incident in barely a week.

According to multiple sources speaking to CNN, the latest jet went down in the Red Sea following what appears to be an arresting gear malfunction during landing.

The pilot and weapons systems officer were forced to eject and were later rescued, suffering only minor injuries. But the jet, valued at over $60 million, now rests on the ocean floor — unrecovered and unrecoverable.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Just last week, another F/A-18 fighter jet fell overboard from the Truman after a “hard turn” to allegedly dodge Iranian-backed Houthi missile fire. That’s two high-tech war machines gone in a matter of days.

According to the official report, the $60 million aircraft from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 136, along with the tow tractor moving it, plunged overboard while the carrier operated in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
