Russia says it is considering putting a nuclear power plant on the moon with China

Russia and China are considering putting a nuclear power plant on the moon from 2033-35, Yuri Borisov, the head of Russia's space agency Roscosmos said on Tuesday, something he said could one day allow lunar settlements to be built.

Borisov, a former deputy defense minister, said that Russia and China had been jointly working on a lunar program and that Moscow was able to contribute with its expertise on "nuclear space energy."

"Today we are seriously considering a project - somewhere at the turn of 2033-2035 - to deliver and install a power unit on the lunar surface together with our Chinese colleagues," Borisov said.

The challenge will be to map out the moon for the best places to mine for the most valuable minerals, and then to build the power plant near the best location.

Unless they can harvest building materials from the moon, it'll be very expensive to rocket everything up there.
There's a lot of silicate minerals up there, which can be used with intense solar heat to make strong building components. Glass is simply heated sand, and is very versatile.
With wireless charging technology and etc., not as much needed to be taken there as at first appears, although some things, at least at first would need to be. Once a chip facility established, doesn't take much to clone, and the programming can be done remotely from earth or during the cloning process.
Building the reactor on the dark side may make cooling a non-issue.

Although, why a build a reactor when it would seem to be far more efficient to simply harvest solar without atmospheric interference, IDK UNLESS the reactor isn't for power, as much as it is for radioactive materiel production and enrichment (think weapons) in a very secure setting. Without haz mat and waste regulations, compacts, treaties, etc. Who knows if radioactive, etc. waste on the moon could harm life on earth, but I wouldn't chance it, and I don't think it's right to intentionally pollute a pristine world, regardless of presence of life there or not.
Also manufacturing all sorts of silica-based components, such as panels, chips, . . . what a location to produce and safeguard chips used for individual identification . . .

The thing is that if either of these two "frenemies" want to do it, they both have to, preferably together so they can work on a takeover attempt of the other one. This "frenemy" or "friendly" enemy interaction is going on all over including in the SCO or Shanghai Cooperation Organization (NATO FOR NASTIES) AND also within the BRIC stuff.

Look for more of this type of cooperation. And watch for the tiny clues of the wrestling match between them behind the curtains.

They perceive an opportunity, and have likely been drawing plans since Obama killed the US space programs which dominated space for years. They want to move while they are the big ones in the room.
