Ramaswamy: U.S. Has ‘Venerated Mediocrity over Excellence’

Imperfect but forgiven

Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG.

“Normalcy” doesn’t cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, we’ll have our asses handed to us by China.

This can be our Sputnik moment. We’ve awaken from slumber before & we can do it again. Trump’s election hopefully marks the beginning of a new golden era in America, but only if our culture fully wakes up. A culture that once again prioritizes achievement over normalcy; excellence over mediocrity; nerdiness over conformity; hard work over laziness.

The Department of Education has ensured that our latest generations, except for a minority percentage who had the support at home to attend college prep/honors classes, are educated to about the 3rd grade level. I don't think that's changed the fact that Americans tend to be willing to work hard while endeavoring to make something of their lives.

That 10-20% that do get well educated and go on to get a STEM degree at the college level often find themselves unable to secure a job due to the H1-B program. I don't think it has anything to do with culture but has everything to do with corporations saving money at the expense of the American people. Additionally, even one story about American workers training H1_B visa holders to replace them is too many. That should never happen and the govmint should never let that happen.

There's a reason why Ramaswamy did poorly in the primaries, Trump needs to reign him in before he does more damage.

Frankly, I'm confused by this. It seemed to me that Mr Ramaswamy was arguing for homegrown talent over imported talent , which to a degree is an excellent viewpoint, imo. But the reaction of business seemed to be that he is destroying America with his attitude. Yet as I read the various points of view, I saw nothing that would indicate that. What am I missing? Can somebody please put it into simple terms?

This is a very tender issue for knowledgeable Americans because the H1-B program has been used and abused against our professional college graduates who frankly, are mostly cream of the crop. They're the youth who worked hard throughout school, are advance in mathematics and/or the sciences, and who all of their lives have worked very hard to succeed, and will continue to. They are not the majority who have been babysat through K-12. They are high achievers who can match or exceed the high achievers of any American generation.

Frankly Ramaswamy said some very foolish things, and this being a very sore spot for those who are familiar with how this program has been used against American workers who are highly trained, and globally competitive, and aren't happy with some of the words that have come out of his mouth.

If he apologizes and keeps quiet for a while, this may blow over. Regardless of what Ramaswamy is advocating for, he blew it big time with some of his statements, which in some cases showed a level of ignorance on this part.
