Traffickers importing cocaine from Latin America rely increasingly on purpose-built, low-profile semi-submersibles that can evade radar and aerial surveillance.
Portuguese authorities have intercepted a “narco-submarine” in the Atlantic Ocean carrying more than 1.7 tonnes of cocaine bound for the Iberian Peninsula.
The semi-submersible was seized during an international operation code-named El Dorado, led by Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria (PJ) and navy with support from the Portuguese air force, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The operation was co-ordinated through the Lisbon-based Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre: Narcotics, which facilitates joint maritime anti-narcotics actions among European countries and their allies.
