Minnesota Democrat Gov Tim Walz announces he will not seek reelection

Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz announced Monday that he will not seek reelection for a third term, citing large-scale fraud scandals involving billions of dollars in misused federal and state program funds and partisan political backlash.

Walz, who also was the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee, issued the following statement, obtained by local Minnesota TV station FOX 9. He will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. on Monday.

"Good morning, and Happy New Year.

"Like many Minnesotans, I was glad to turn the page on 2025. It was an extraordinarily difficult year for our state. And it ended on a particularly sour note.

"For the last several years, an organized group of criminals have sought to take advantage of our state’s generosity. And even as we make progress in the fight against the fraudsters, we now see an organized group of political actors seeking to take advantage of the crisis."

Pam Bondi: 85 Somalis Charged, 60 People Guilty in Minnesota Fraud​

In a post on X, Bondi praised citizen journalist Nick Shirley’s reporting, which showed Americans “the scale of fraud” taking place in Minnesota under Gov. Tim Walz (D).

“@NickShirleyyy’s work has helped show Americans the scale of fraud in Tim Walz’s Minnesota,” Bondi said. “@TheJusticeDept has been investigating this for months. So far, we have charged 98 individuals — 85 of Somali descent — and more than 60 have been found guilty in court.”

“We have more prosecutions coming…BUCKLE UP, LAWMAKERS!” Bondi added.

Bondi’s post comes after Shirley released a video showing him visiting several daycare centers in Minnesota that were reportedly receiving millions of dollars in federal aid, despite there being no signs of children at the locations.

The blame for Somali fraud in Minnesota goes to the Democratic Party and to the GOP, not to imported Somalis and their zero-sum culture, says the editorial board of Robert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal.

“Minnesota’s Fraud Problem Isn’t Immigrants: It’s the vast size of the welfare state that corrupts them,” the newspaper’s editorial board wrote on January 2. It continues:

With so much money and so many programs, this [state’s welfare benefits are] an open vault for scammers — especially when politicians are loathe to police fraud because doing so might be called “racist” or “anti-poor.” But it’s also corrupting for beneficiaries who have an incentive to remain on the dole rather than build an independent life.

Republicans complain about fraud, but too few want to tackle the perverse incentives that allow it to flourish.

The article does not even try to explain why ordinary Americans — or migrants from European-style cultures — are far less likely to steal from the state’s myriad welfare programs.

The local major newspaper included the potential for DFL Sen. Klobuchar to run for Governor in its article regarding Gov. Walz.

On the hard-copy on the newsstand, under the headline, Sen. Klobuchar indicated she couldn't devote full-time to a campaign.


I'd rather she stayed Senator, so she can continue to leak DFL Caucus anti-gun stuff and continue working on fixing broken stuff at the VA at the National level (as well as intervening at the local VAMC). Also not cede the Senior Senator position to Sen. Smith, who's a whole LOT worse.


There are some local, third-party politicians, who might actually do an excellent job as Governor, and don't have rabid social or political leanings (in any direction). We'll see when (and if) a thorough housecleaning. If we have to start all over, so be it. We've "voted the rascals out" before.

Hopefully, crooked bureaucrats will see their protection disappear and resign/come clean/whistleblow so this whole mess can be cleaned up. FWIW, I'd much rather restitution and bar from public employment, etc. for most fraudsters than aggravating the financial hit. Involved Illegals and legal non-citizens can get the money wired directly to the State from their respective governments before getting deported.


And now, the fraud at social services/mental health services is getting attention. Maybe I'll be able to get help for my sibling, yet.

We can blame Minnesota all we want, but the federal govt in DC should have investigated the huge increase in funds being sent to that state. The current administration is trying to solve the problem, but the Biden gang is certainly guilty for ignoring for years. From what has been uncovered so far, only an embecile would not have known what was happening.

Also, I firmly believe the immigrant Somali's could not have possible accomplished this without help from someone with expertise in government paperwork and procedure. Most goverment programs are configured so most people will give up due to the endless red tape and regualtions. I have attempted to take advantage of some farm programs but, found all are impossible to qualify due to stipulations. So to think an immigrant with limited communication skills could fill out the paperwork and qualify for these tax dollars is just pure ignorance. This fraud was known and encouraged, much like other Democrat entities like USAID.

It may or may not be fraudulent. Businesses get government grants for all sorts of things.

Is it a sheltered (or partial sheltered) workshop/workplace or affiliated with the VA/Veteran organization, rehab, employment training, etc.?
Natural disaster or government fault for something that needed to be repaired/upgraded?
Green energy?
Sponge City/similar or urban garden/similar?
Haz mat remediation/renovation?
Or?
Some combination?
