Mast directs Foreign Affairs Committee to replace ‘West Bank’ with ‘Judea and Samaria’

U.S. Representative Brian Mast (R-Fla.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, instructed committee staff on Feb. 25 to refer to the West Bank as Judea and Samaria in “all formal correspondence, communication and documentation.”

“Jewish roots in this region span centuries and we must recognize that fact in both word and deed,” he wrote.

Given efforts to dehumanize Jews throughout the world, even prior to the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack, “We must do our part to stem this reprehensible tide of antisemitism and recognize Israel’s rightful claim to the cradle of Jewish civilization,” Mast added.

The directive is the latest in a series of initiatives by pro-Israel, conservative congressmen who have expressed support for changing the terminology and extending Israel’s sovereignty over the disputed area.

Tenney, colleagues ask Trump to recognize Israeli Judea, Samaria sovereignty

An Upstate New York congresswoman says Israel should be allowed to annex the land west of the Jordan River captured during the Six-Day War, and asked U.S. President Donald Trump to sign off on it.

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) asked Trump to recognize Israel’s right to sovereignty over the land that the U.S. government currently refers to as the “West Bank.” The Israeli government and many others use the biblical names “Judea and Samaria.”

In a letter to the president dated Tuesday, Tenney said that the territory, which was placed under partial Palestinian control in the 1993 Oslo Accords, is where 80% of Jewish scripture took place and comprises “the Judeo-Christian biblical heartland.”

“This region is the heart of our shared Judeo-Christian heritage, and recognition of the right of Israel to declare sovereignty over this region would build upon your previous recognition of the importance of this heritage,” stated the letter, which Reps. Andy Harris (R-Md.), Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Barry Moore (R-Ala.), Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) and Randy Weber (R-Texas).

Cruz: ‘Israel’s right to Judea and Samaria starts in the Bible’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Tuesday expressed his long-held support for Israel and what he said was its biblically rooted right to its historic homeland in Judea and Samaria.

Addressing the Sovereignty Conference 2025 in Jerusalem on Tuesday via video, Cruz reiterated his long-held position that Israel has an “absolute right to determine what happens in Judea and Samaria.”

That right “starts in the Bible and extends through modern times,” he added.

Thanking Yesha Council chairman Israel Gantz for his work to strengthen the U.S.-Israel alliance, Cruz said, “As you meet today, have confidence that the American people stand with you. And under President Trump and our new Republican Congress, the American government stands with you as well.”

CPAC’s resolution on Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria

At the end of last week, a resolution was passed during an international summit on the sidelines of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland, calling on the United States and its allies to recognize Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.

Yesha Council Chairman and head of the Binyamin Regional Council Israel Ganz, who had been working with senior CPAC members to help consolidate the resolution, thanked it for passing the motion and said: “Your declaration is akin to the Balfour Declaration.”
