Livestock Trade with Mexico Halted over New World Screwworm Outbreak

Well-known
The U.S. has temporarily halted livestock trade with Mexico due to an outbreak of New World screwworm among cattle, bison, and horses detected in Veracruz.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced the decision to halt the trade on Wednesday.

“I have ordered an immediate shutdown of live cattle, bison, and horse trade through the southern U.S.-Mexico border. This decisive action comes after Mexico confirmed another case of New World Screwworm [NWS] in Veracruz. As promised, [USDA] remains vigilant to ensure the protection of America’s livestock and food supply,” Rollins wrote on X.

I like it when countries get to enforce their agricultural rules for safety of their own citizens. Regulating what they allow into their borders- meat, dairy, produce! Medical supplies, Rx meds, OTC meds. Anything that could be a hazard to local agriculture, or consumers.

That ought to be one of the definitions of a country's rights within it's borders.

Using their own versions of the FDA and the USDA.

In this case the USDA is doing their job!

This is how it should work.

And WHY it's important.

Congratulations Mexico for being on the ball and honest and testing their livestock.
