We are 16 days into the New Year, and it seems like the world is unraveling. This new year has opened with volatility, violence, and vitriol. The headlines are loud, the pace feels fast, and the world seems angrier, more divided, and more unstable. But what does this mean? For many believers, it can feel quite unsettling, as if our peace is slowly being eroded.
Scripture never tells us to ignore the present times or bury our heads in the sand. Jesus Himself rebuked those who could read the weather but could not discern the spiritual season. We are called to watch and to be alert. We are called to understand the days, but we are never called to fixate on the headlines. We are called to fix our eyes on Jesus, “the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
There is a difference between awareness and absorption. Awareness keeps us informed, while absorption steals our peace and slowly trains our hearts to react instead of trust. The world wants your attention, but God wants your affection.
