Immigration issues top of mind in Poilievre byelection debate

The Buffalo Roundtable discuss the focus candidates had on mass immigration during the Battle River—Crowfoot byelection, where Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is looking to secure a seat in the House of Commons.

After it received relatively little attention during April's federal election, Conservatives have shifted their focus to immigration concerns.

And immigration was top of mind for the candidates during Tuesday night's byelection debate in Alberta's Battle River—Crowfoot riding, where Pierre Poilievre is looking to secure a seat so he can return to the House of Commons.

Conservatives in Western Canada are “sick and tired of Ottawa ruling over us and being against us every step of the way,” said Berta Proud Dad. “Conservatives out east don't necessarily see that, because they're just used to eastern politics.”

Abraham wasn't the only one calling for a change to Canada's immigration system, as Poilievre said reiterated his stance that Canada “needs to have negative population growth” for “several years.”

The Conservative leader's stronger stance on immigration “would have been great points to make in the lead-up to the federal election,” said Lise, who felt it could have had a “monumental impact” among voters.

Lise is dead wrong. I was following that closely during our election and Poilievre made it clear. He was winning until Trump made some statements that threw Poilievre under the bus, and swung the popular vote to Carney - Trump's pick. Within days Trump was laughing with a Fox news host (Laura Ingraham if I recall correctly) about his ability to influence our elections. Something he hated when it was done to him, but something he laughed and gloated over when he did it to Canada. Fixing elections isn't pretty anytime it's done.

Suddenly it became about not being annexed by Trump as the "cherished" 51st state (probably as cherished as Puerto Rico feels). And Carney was positioned to lead that fight, because Poilievre was known as an American supporter, someone who agreed with Trump on sociopolitics and economics. As Trump said in that same interview, he'd prefer Carney, easier to push around. He got his wish. I noticed Carney caved with the tax on internet stuff but Trump didnt' even say thanks, or acknowledge it. Just carried on with the extra tariffs on steel, aluminum and copper.

So it goes.

Right now this by election is important, but simply to make points with Carney to listen to the grass roots.

We don't need any more muslims especially from Gaza that are changing our demographics and are statistically involved in hate crimes against Jews, synagogues and Jewish businesses.

Sadly Carney is pandering to the muslim vote regarding Gaza and I am afraid he will import more Gazans and other muslim terrorists by the plane load as Trudeau before him did.

I am so sorry that he did influence your elections. I wish Canada had Pollievre instead of Carney. It saddens me what is going on in Canada and you've shared a bit about how hard it's been on you I've grown up knowing that much about Canada is superior to the US and experienced that. One example is contrasting Whitehorse, Yukon to LA. I was spending a summer traveling with a camper through Canada with a guy. I was asleep and he was out partying when the Mounties came knocking at my door. The guy had gotten himself arrested and a few stragglers from the party were there too and everyone was so incredibly nice! They were concerned and helped me decide what to do. I felt encouraged enough to continue traveling alone, spending the last week of my visa in Dawson Creek -- what an amazing history. Lots of Canadians shared what I kinda knew, you are all overall a bit more courageous and kind. About LA: My son was a little guy and I was a single mom who saved enough for a vacation to Disneyland (over 30-years ago). Not only did it feel risky walking from our hotel (a block from Disneyland) anywhere, but at a local cafe we were treated like we were the dirt under the wait staff's feet. They tended to treat everyone that way, in sharp contrast with the friendly attitude at Disneyland (but was kinda phony).

Maybe my attachment to Canada is also influenced by the Arrow Lakes system that is the northern boundary of the Interior Salish peoples that I'm from. According to the museum staff in Nakusp, the ruling matriarch of the entire people resided in the Nakusp area. I used to try and spend several days in Nakusp every year and loved exploring the non commercial hot springs and canoe on the upper lake.

Thank you Hol. Of all the things lately, that has been the hardest one to forgive and deal with even though I know it is God who puts leaders into place, and therefore it was His will that Carney lead Canada. Every time I see something evil that Carney does from aligning us with France and Britain to going against Israel I remember Poilievre's positions and grieve.

On a cheery note, I don't know if I ever told you that we lived near the Arrow Lakes at one point. G worked at the dam between Castlegar and Nelson and the hot springs up there in Nakusp were a favourite. G loved the Arrow Lakes. Daughter and son in law honeymooned up there and spent time in the hotsprings. Very good place.

And my dad's cabin on Lake Labarge was just off the highway to Dawson City in the Yukon. Beautiful spot. Bees buzzing all "night" long in the sunshine and the twilight.
