IDF orders evacuation of Sana'a Airport

Almost Heaven

Well-known
IDF Arabic Language Spokesman Avichay Adraee issued an urgent warning on Tuesday, ordering the evacuation of the Sana'a International Airport in Yemen's capital.

"We call upon you to evacuate the airport area - Sana'a International Airport - immediately and warn everyone in your vicinity of the need to evacuate this area immediately. Failure to evacuate and move away from the place exposes you to danger," the Spokesman wrote in Arabic.

From reports from Israeli sources on Telegram it seems that the airport is completely disabled/destroyed. In descriptions about the only thing I couldn't find mentioned was the airport tower, but it didn't appear in any of the photos/videos of the aftermath so I'm guessing it is gone along with terminal(s), service and support buildings, all civilian aircraft that were on location, and the runway itself. In addition to the airport, Israel struck a couple more power plants and a nearby airbase.

Defense Minister: 'We destroyed the airport in Sana'a, a message to Iran'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz today addressed the latest IDF attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen.

Netanyahu stated, "Yesterday we dealt a blow, a hard blow, to the port of Hodeidah. Today our planes attacked the airport in Sana'a, which enables the army of terror and firing on Israel."

He said, "Without Iran's approval and support, the Houthis could not carry out their criminal missile attack." Netanyahu added, "We will hold accountable anyone who attacks the State of Israel," and praised the Chief of Staff, the Air Force, and intelligence for the "perfect execution" of the strikes.

Defense Minister Katz stated, "The Houthi terrorist organization attempted to strike Ben-Gurion Airport, and in response, we destroyed the airport in Sana'a today."

He emphasized that this is also a message to Iran, "You bear direct responsibility for every attack by the Houthi octopus tentacle against the State of Israel - and you will also bear the full consequences."

I've been scouring the web for pics but all I can find are far off videos of smoke and fire. All the images I can find are from previous attacks on the airport. I wanted to see the damage to estimate how long it might take to begin operating again. At least once before the tower was gutted by a bomb but must have been restored. An airstrip can usually be restored to "good enough" fairly quickly, and a country like that could probably manage without a terminal.

You’re right, airports can be rebuilt quickly. However, then it could become a game of “whack a mole” which the IDF will win. Build it again, destroy it again…over and over.
