Greenland's opposition wins election dominated by independence and Trump

The Democrats party wants a gradual move to independence but the second-placed party is keen to speed it up.

Greenland's centre-right opposition has won a surprise general election victory - in a vote dominated by independence and US President Donald Trump's pledge to take over the semi-autonomous territory.

The Democratic party, which favours a gradual approach to independence from Denmark - achieved around 30% of the vote, near-complete results show.

"Greenland needs us to stand together in a time of great interest from outside," party leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen told local media. "There is a need for unity, so we will enter into negotiations with everyone."

The Democratic party, which favours a gradual approach to independence from Denmark - achieved around 30% of the vote, near-complete results show.

I hope he drags his feet on separating from Denmark, because he won't have a chance of self determination otherwise.

Trump will NOT let the other interested parties gain a foothold. Those are Russia and China btw. Both have been interested in gaining a foothold in Greenland, and Russian subs, trawlers etc are regularly patrolling Greenland's waters. Greenland is a weak spot.

Greenland is also essential for American protection from missiles originating in Russia as well as a beachhead in the Arctic which Russia is trying to control.

America has had a base in Greenland since WW2. There is no way that Greenland could protect that base from Chinese interest, or Russian spy operations- that is purely up to America to protect that base and from there, they would take control of the entire place. They would HAVE to.

I doubt Trump will wait for Greenlanders to decide what they want to do next.
