Gantz set to leave government Saturday as ultimatum deadline approaches

The deadline set by Minister-without-portfolio Benny Gantz for his party National Unity to leave the government if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not make the changes Gantz laid out in May will be reached on Saturday.

Gantz said on May 18 that his party would leave if Netanyahu did not adopt six objectives: Returning the hostages; demolishing Hamas and demilitarizing the Gaza Strip; providing a governing alternative in the strip; returning residents of the North to their homes by September 1 and rehabilitating the western Negev; promoting normalization with Saudi Arabia; and adopting an outline for standardized national service in which all Israelis serve the country.

“If you choose to lead the nation to the abyss, we will withdraw from the government, turn to the people, and form a government that can bring about a real victory,” Gantz said.

The Americans contacted Gantz in the last few days. They tried to check the possibility of delaying/preventing his withdrawal from the unity government due to the ongoing talks for a new hostage deal. The Americans consider Gantz a close partner and expressed "concern" about his withdrawal at this time.

Gantz scraps anticipated resignation announcement following news of hostages’ rescue
War cabinet member Benny Gantz on Saturday canceled a news conference planned for the evening, during which he was expected to announce his National Unity party was leaving the government.

The decision came after the military’s surprise announcement Saturday afternoon that special forces operating in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp rescued four hostages kidnapped by Hamas terrorists on October 7 from the Supernova musical festival near Kibbutz Re’im: Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv. Initial assessments found them to be in good condition, and they were taken for further evaluation at a hospital, where they were reunited with their families after eight months in captivity.

It was not immediately clear if Gantz would reschedule the press conference for another time.

Benny Gantz resigns from wartime government
Minister-without-portfolio Benny Gantz announced Sunday evening that he is resigning from the emergency government.

"[Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is preventing us from moving forward to a real victory," said Gantz. "And so today we are leaving the emergency government with a heavy heart, but with our whole heart."

"Fateful, strategic decisions are met with hesitance and procrastination due to political considerations," said Gantz, criticizing the current government's recent behavior.

Gantz called for elections to be held in the fall, urging Netanyahu to set an agreed-on date for them to occur.

Gvir has offered to step up to being part if the war cabinet.

Does anyone know whether Gvir is the one that is sort of a war mongerer or was chastised for it when he tried to be prime minister?
Well Gantz is on the Left and loves anything from Biden's team. He's Biden's man in Jerusalem thru and thru. Hates Bibi, and wants to lead the left to victory like when he, Bennett and Yair Lapid. Was trying to use the hostage situation to his political advantage (take the Biden plan which was the Hamas plan) to bring them home. Until the hostage rescue which meant that he had to try something else to regain power.

Ben Gvir on the other hand is on the far side of the Right wing, and ultra nationalist, Bible (OT) believing and militant in his desire to get the Temple Mount back in use for Jews to pray on, sacrifice on, build a temple on etc. He is often found in the middle of an argument, but Biblically he's generally on the side of the Bible when it comes to the land etc. NOT the NT, he's a very committed religious Jew. He wants the land back, the Arabs out and the Temple back in Jewish control.

Netanyahu walks an incredible tight rope between these 2 and all the other members of his coalition. He puts up with Gantz, but understands where Gvir is coming from. He and Gvir have a lot in common but

BUT

Gvir in the war cabinet would be like the nuclear option for Israel. It has possibilities but it would definitely light the Middle East on fire.
