Based on his other reports on Egypt in general, I suspect they're there to keep Gazans from breaching the border into Egypt as fighting moves to the southern edge of the strip, not because they plan to join against Israel or take an active part in any way.

This is precisely what Egypt is doing. They've been doing that all along. I think Egypt wants to see Hamas gone too.

Yes, and they also have a vested interest in Israel surviving as a check on the Muslim Brotherhood (sunni) and Iran (shiite). I think the abc news report is just the latest case of saying one thing in public for appearances and another in private. And don't even get me started on media spin....
