Ex-Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin, who was convicted for murdering George Floyd in May 2020, was reportedly stabbed Friday by a fellow prisoner in Arizona.

Looked by the book to me. Of course, the wrong impression can't be achieved from a video.
I really dont want to rehash old incidents, but even the officers, and medics on the scene were trying to get him to stop. The department posted the training manual, and clearly, he violated what he was trained to do.

It matters little how an incident looks to us average Joes, but was it legal, by his own departments manuals - No

Derek Chauvin's family has received no updates after prison stabbing, attorney says

November 26, 2023 / 9:24 AM CST / AP

"MINNEAPOLIS — An attorney for Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, said Saturday that Chauvin's family has been kept in the dark by federal prison officials after he was stabbed in prison.

The lawyer, Gregory M. Erickson, slammed the lack of transparency by the Federal Bureau of Prisons a day after his client was stabbed on Friday by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, a prison that has been plagued by security lapses and staffing shortages.

A person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Friday that Chauvin was seriously injured in the stabbing. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the attack. On Saturday, Brian Evans, a spokesperson for the Minnesota attorney general's office, said: "We have heard that he is expected to survive."

Erickson said Chauvin's family and his attorneys have hit a wall trying to obtain information about the attack from Bureau of Prisons officials. He said Chauvin's family has been forced to assume he is in stable condition, based only on news accounts, and has been contacting the prison repeatedly seeking updates but have been provided with no information.

"As an outsider, I view this lack of communication with his attorneys and family members as completely outrageous," Erickson said in a statement to the AP. "It appears to be indicative of a poorly run facility and indicates how Derek's assault was allowed to happen.""

After a prisoner has managed to make or procure a weapon, there are times during the day, usually when prisoners are going to and from an activity, like mealtimes, for example, when it's quite easy for an inmate to be attacked by another. Everything is steel and/or concrete so even shoving another down the stairs can have disastrous results for the victim. Prison employees in most cases are not directly present during inmate movements to and from an activity, but are locked safely into monitoring stations where they can see most everything. In some layouts an inmate could be attacked by someone who shares a common area but in a case like that it would be easier to identify the perp, so is less likely to occur. During mass movement to and from an activity is when it's most likely to happen as that's when it'll be harder to identify the perp(s).

There are many ways a marked prisoner can be taken out. In addition to what you posted, guards can also be in a situation where they feel its ok to turn a blind eye to what is, or will happen. This has been proven true a number of times over the decades when a notorious person is incarcerated and has a price on his head. Rapists, child molesters, cops, always are a marked target, and especially Chauvin.
