Fire officials describe harrowing conditions as Southern California wildfire exploded

Fire authorities on Sunday described battling fierce, howling winds and rescuing people in a fast-moving Southern California wildfire that forced thousands of people to flee and destroyed at least 168 structures and damaged 67.

Crews increased containment of the Mountain Fire to 31% in Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles, up from 26% on Sunday morning. The fire’s size remains around 32 square miles.

“I am grateful for the number of lives that were saved and the fact that we have zero reported fatalities,” said an emotional Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner at a community meeting Sunday night.

My nephew and his wife were evacuated from their home in Camarillo in Ventura County.
They are currently displaced and don't know whether they have a home to go back to yet.
The fire is real bad but Thank God the Santa Ana winds have calmed and aren't exasperating the spread of the fire right now, and my family was able to get out of the area before the fire got to Camarillo. I hope they have a house to go back to when the fire danger is clear.

My daughter's boyfriend works for the Forest Service and was in San Bernadino last week. His time for this year is coming to an end the end of this week. It will be left mainly temp fire fighters, National Guard and local fire service to battle with a few Forest Service regulars in watching to see if they need to recall those that have been at it all summer already. I will be glad when he finally gets moved up. He has been an on the ground fire fighter for the past 17 to 18 years. He is being moved up to the planning and managing level due to age. He is now hitting his mid 30s and with what he has put his body through all those years it is time to move up. He has earned it.
