Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has threatened a large North Texas mosque and its affiliates with “the full weight of the law” if the group doesn’t stop construction on a proposed Muslim-centric neighborhood.
On Feb. 24, Abbott posted about the projects on X. “To be clear, Sharia law is not allowed in Texas,” he wrote. “Nor are Sharia cities. Nor are ‘no go zones’ which this project seems to imply. Bottom line: The project as proposed in the video is not allowed in Texas.”
Sharia is the moral code for followers of Islam, but the interpretation and administration varies based on different sects, communities, countries and individuals, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations. There is no single Sharia code, similar to how there is no uniform body of law for the thousands of Christian sects throughout the world.
In an April 1 news release, Abbott said construction on EPIC City needs to stop.
“The State of Texas will enforce its laws and protect our communities from unlawful actions or threats posed by EPIC or its affiliates,” Abbott said. “They must confirm within seven days that they are immediately ceasing any construction of their illegal project or face the full weight of the law.”
