(Bloomberg) -- Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said President Donald Trump has confirmed that he planned to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s June summit in The Hague.
“His presence will be very important,” Schoof told reporters Thursday following a phone call he had with the American president. Trump assured him during the conversation that he would attend, Schoof added.
A NATO official said they would announce the summit participants in due time. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Although Trump’s intention to attend has been unclear, Schoof said that he and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had been counting on his presence all along. Schoof’s comments follow a visit Wednesday to meet Rutte, himself a former Dutch prime minister, at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
