Do the 7 Revelation letters represent 7 historical periods?

I'm working through this series in my studies and I've read that each of the letters represent historical periods. Some are clearer to see than others. I've also heard (from Chuck Missler) that each letter has a corresponding parable. I hadn't heard that. I think the historical reference makes sense, the parables I'm having a harder time with. What do all of you think?

I've never had personal clarity on the description of the churches at the beginning of Revelation. I've read a lot of very good thoughts from others. I suspect that those chapters in Revelation have more than one application.

They could be historical periods, but that would be only so in the western world.
In Africa and Asia for instance, the consecutive timeframe doesn't add up.

I can live with the interpretation that it was 7 literal churches at that time with those issues/status and eras of the church going forward.
