Dershowitz: Supreme Court moving away from race-based congressional districts

TCC

Well-known

The Supreme Court signaled Wednesday that it may soon end the practice of drawing congressional districts based on race. During arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whose vote could decide the case, along with that of Chief Justice John Roberts, pressed civil rights advocates on when race-based remedies should come to an end.

"The issue, as you know, is that this court's cases in a variety of contexts have said that race-based remedies are permissible for a period of time, sometimes for a long period of time, decades in some cases, but that they should not be indefinite and should have an endpoint," Kavanaugh said. "What exactly do you think the end point should be for the intentional use of race to create districts?"

This whole drawing up districts has always been sketchy in my opinion, and has been manipulated for political gain by both parties. If we really want to eliminate racism we need to stop using race to divide us as a nation. As long as race is a determining factor in anything we can never be free of claims of racism. Using race to divide districts is in itself racist. It's like saying certain candidates cannot be elected unless they are given special districts to guarantee success. Obama has proved that is no longer the case. With blacks being about 13% of the total population, the U.S. elected a black President twice. If race is a determining factor then Obama should have never had a chance.

Great points DWB. We'd think after Obama we could just move on. Amen. The right did not have good campaigns against Obama. We kinda sucked....lol. So maybe Obama won the elections honestly. Because we did so bad. But I believe the voter cheating system has been in the game for quite a long while. And even though the right political campaigns at the time were not very good, we might have still won if there was no cheating perhaps. Which would not speak great of a country...lol. But the way i understand it even though both sides do have done it (districting manipulation), it would seem the left needs far more of than the right. Because the left is selling out the far left crazy train political sensabilities. Not normal. And not America. And can't win elections. So lets zone everything. :p
