The Inflation Reduction Act continued the subsidies, which will now expire if Congress does not extend the enhanced subsidies.

Unless you work for the Federal govmint, you might not notice that they've shut down all of their non-esssential services. When I was in the military and there would be a govmint shutdown, it always reopened in time to get paid. I never knew for sure or not if we would get paid if the govmint didn't reopen in time for payday.

Hopefully you have some reserve just in case. During my time in the military I always made sure to live below my means and keep a reserve on account of for some reason I could never bring myself to trust/count on the US govmint.

We did up until this summer. Mike just finished the academy for this new government job and while in the 2 month training, his pay was just enough to pay our rent and living expenses. Unfortunately, I got hit with a major car repair, kidney stones leading to surgery, and all of the medical bills have been coming in. We're usually just fine with savings, but these last several months have been one hit after another. My side practice is usually a huge help but I had to take a massive pause because Mike was gone and I had the Kidney Stone and surgery to recover from, literally the entire month of August.

Just really rough timing for us with all of these unexpected expenses. Thankfully we had our savings to use. Now we just have to rebuild it and are going into this shutdown without the reserve we usually have. We have a little left that could cover a small car repair, but not enough for the rent November 1st. I'm praying the Lord keep us safe from illness, harm or any major expenses until we can replenish our emergency fund again and that the shutdown will be lifted by then.

My daughter is a GS worker at a VA medical center, so she wont be affected by any shutdown regardless of how long. VA Medical facilities are pre funded.

Oh that's wonderful because my husband works as a Police Officer at a VA Hospital. Maybe he won't be impacted.
