I'm not unhappy!
He's being forced into reality by a shrinking economy and dropping job numbers. He can't afford to be an environmentalist AND run the country both.
I listened to his speech or as much as I could tolerate. He was speaking alternating English and French, but wasn't simply regurgitating what he had just said, so I missed a fair bit of what he was saying in French. However there was a lot of it. Not just on environmental stuff. Some will def impact the US export economy- we are one of your biggest markets- but that too is due for a change. The 88 US F-35s that we ordered, may only be the 16 that we've paid for already, and the Swedish Gripen will replace the rest of the F-35s. Costs for the F-35 went way up, the Gripen is less now, and fits our climate better. If Trump forces the issue we may have to buy the F-35s to keep him calm, but not if Carney can help it. (that was largely in French- and I'm paraphrasing big time here)
But back to the EV stuff- He will pivot to Chinese EVs according to a Globe and Mail or it might have been the Hub or possibly David Frum - having listened to all of them regards his speechifying.
And that is only if China behaves - which they aren't right now - they see us as a tool of the States (probably right there) so they are punishing our canola oil exports. Take THAT Trump they say as they swing wildly at Canadian Canola!
Life is a rough and winding road in the pursuit of environmental correctness, full of bumps and unpleasant surprises. Poor Carney.
Poor Canada if he makes a trade deal with China for EVs!
Xi is feeling bumptious towards the West, so I doubt we will do a side deal with China. Xi is more interested in India right now, and soothing their hurt feelings over Trump's latest round of 50% tariffs. Xi doesn't have the time of day for a bunch of Canucks who don't particularly show interest in EVs even when the govt passes laws to force us that way.
I'm not holding my breath. Most people in Canada are breathing a sigh of relief.
EVs don't perform well in Canadian winter conditions, nor are they equipped to go long distances between charging stations. Unlike gas or diesel which can be put in jerry cans in the back in case you are in a pinch on the Stewart Cassiar or the like.
Add in the made in China factor and it's like

Little environmentally minded yuppies in Vancouver and Toronto will buy them anyway, from anywhere, but the rest of us needn't bother.
Happy day.
