Bone-Chilling Cold Tests Power Grids From Texas to Alberta

(Bloomberg) -- An Arctic blast that’s sweeping through North America is heightening the risk of blackouts. With more cold still in the forecast, electric grids from Texas to Alberta will continue to be under strain and some power prices have surged.

In Texas, which is facing one of its biggest grid tests since deadly winter blackouts in 2021, power demand on Sunday from homes and businesses is expected to hit a winter record of more than 75 gigawatts — and then later in the week possibly set an all-time record. The state’s grid operator asked people to conserve electricity use for Monday morning and warned of a power capacity shortage between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., “which causes a risk” of an energy emergency event, according to a notice Sunday evening.

Still, state officials have said they aren’t anticipating a grid emergency.

In Washington State and Alberta — where more than 1 million people saw Calgary temperatures at noon local time below minus 20F (-29C) — utilities and grid operators have been making pleas for consumers to conserve energy.

Its probably all related to global warming…..*maisey*

I've gotten two notices from our power company suggesting I turn down the thermostat a few degrees during this cold spell... isn't 60 deg F down far enough? I should call them up and play the old man (pretend, you know) and ask them if they really want me to turn my thermostat down to 57 deg F...

That's what our thermostat seems to be running at lately (not by choice- hubs needs to order a part for the furnace.) I'm so grateful that we have a fireplace.

Anybody noticed the problems for electric vehicles in the cold? There's been a few reports- people can't charge the lithium ion batteries quickly enough in the cold (known battery issue) and of course charging an EV is further drain on the grid.

Oh and those little EVs don't travel as far per charge in cold weather.

Here in the Houston area, it has been low 20s during the day!!! Such a nice change from the 105-112° it was alllllllllll summer!
But for the last two days, no coffee shops are open, not even Starbucks (which is even open on Christmas)!
I'm not seeing the connection-- too cold to serve coffee?!

And, it snowed here on Monday! :o
I do not believe in climate change but I'm beginning to think that man is (purposefully) changing the weather because it was the weirdest ice and snow I've ever seen. Like frozen slick slime... very strange.
