Biggest D.C. Snowstorm in Years Threatens to Derail 2024 Election Certification as Congress Flees Capital Despite Advisory to Stay

A powerful winter storm is set to sweep through the nation’s capital, potentially delivering the heaviest snowfall seen since January 2022, or even as far back as 2019.

The timing couldn’t be more consequential, with the heaviest snowfall forecasted during the Monday morning commute—the very day Congress is set to certify the presidential election results.

Reports have emerged that several members of Congress have already fled the capital over the weekend, defying advisories to remain in D.C.

“January 6th at 1:00 pm Congress must certify President Trump’s historic election,” Greene declared in a fiery tweet.

“Washington has a winter storm warning for Jan 5-7th expecting possibly a foot of snow. Many members of Congress left town this weekend even though they were told to stay. I’m here and will walk to the Capitol if I have to.”

It only takes an inch of snow or less to shut down everything inside the Beltway. I've never seen a place so scared of a little snow. Can't tell you how many times I had to dodge vehicles abandoned in the middle (and I do mean the middle) of the freeway when we got a little snow in the area. When it would snow the wife and I would drive around and try to find an open restaurant. 98% of them would be closed.

According to the weather newscast we are suppose to have between 12-14" of snow. This is the worst snowfall I have ever seen.

That's a lot of snow for anyone. Too much to drive in until some big wheeled trucks have packed it down a bit.
We got our food on Friday so we are good until Thursday. We need the sun to come out to help melt it, but temps are low. We had a lot of street cleaners last night, but more snow today so no one has been on our street. I am sure they are busy with the main streets.

Some people panic when they get a few inches although DC is going to get hit hard.

I'm in the middle of South Jersey and they are calling for 5 to 7 inches for us. Thankfully I have off today and tomorrow. I broke out the snow shovels and test ran the snow blower last night. We don't need to go anywhere but if we did between my truck and my wife's Grand Cherokee, we're fine. I don't mind driving in the snow, it's everyone else I don't trust.

We are a bit below the line of this current snow coming east. Had a few moments of a sleet/rain mix just as I was headed into the grocery store yesterday evening. Today's supposed to get to 55° and rain. We may see a little bit of snow or a mix getting towards this weekend, but it's supposed to change over to rain pretty quick.

@LightOfMyLife, 12-14" is a healthy dose. The most I ever saw I was a kid in the blizzard of '78 up in Connecticut. We made snow forts, snowmen, had snowball fights, strapped on our cross country skis to explore the neighborhood, and sledded for days in between breaks by the fire with hot chocolates. Back then we'd put our cotton sock-clad feet into bread bags before putting on boots. It's not so much fun once we get older, unless you have a youngun to take sledding. When our eldest was about 5, we got a pretty good snow here, and had a ball taking him down to the town common which has some gentle rolling hills. Hard to come by a decent sledding hill around here.

We were suppose to get 2-4" from that system moving through your area now,, it completely missed us but we have had some real doozies in our area since I was a kid. Some winters no snow, others a few small snows, sometimes one big blizzard like back in 1975 we had 20'+ drifts everywhere and it took a few weeks to get everything/travel back to normal. About 5-6 years ago we got a 3"-12" snow every 4-5 days and ended the season with 50" or more, just never know what's coming weather wise in the mid west.

Here we are, a few hours later and for us it wasn't much. Some parts of South Jersey, further south of us, got up to 7" so far. I'm measuring 2" (barely) on a table in my back yard. I can still see grass. I don't think it's even worth using the snow blower. It's just a small single stage but even this is too little to use it on. The weather forecasters really got this one wrong.

Here, adults do all the outdoor activities, including sliding on a cardboard box down a hill (or toboggans, sleds, mini-boggans, flying saucers, cafeteria trays, etc.), snow angels, snowball fights, pond hockey, snow forts, skating, downhill and cross-country skiing, ski jumping, curling, ice fishing, ice diving, ice sculpting, snowshoeing, ice sailing and racing, ice kiting, ice surfing, skjoring, etc., etc., etc. With and without kids. Kids can't have all the fun. No judgement (at least from real Minnesotans), and often joining in.
Waiting to see a woman on skates or skis in traditional muslim, hindu, etc. attire use it as a sail :)
Winter is God's way of letting adults play <3

Plus, we get to stay up later, so we can watch the Northern lights and admire the reflected colors on the snow and ice :)
It's been cold, so even though essentially no snow on the ground, we can see the dancing reflections on the frozen lakes and ponds :)
The very cold air plus clear skies also good for stargazing :)
