Reagan National Airport crash: Trump, lawmakers react to tragedy as officials investigate

Lawmakers across the U.S. expressed sympathy and grief after a passenger plane collided with a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport in the Washington, D.C. area on Wednesday night.

A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet operating as an American Airlines flight collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter approaching Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, around 9 p.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The flight left Wichita, Kansas, earlier that day.

The passenger flight was carrying 60 people, but officials have not confirmed the exact number of injuries and fatalities. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who started work on Monday, said that he was aware of the incident in a post on X.

"DoD actively monitoring," Hegseth's tweet read. "Poised to assist if needed. Prayers for all involved."

“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God Bless their souls," Trump said in a statement. "Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”

The president later observed that it appeared the collision should have been prevented, because it occurred on a clear night, and the plane's lights were on.

"The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time," Trump posted on Truth Social. "It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!"

I agree, the whole thing is suss, why was the blackhawk flying atraight towards the plane?

Three soldiers on the Blackhawk 60 souls plus four crew on the passenger jet. No survivors. They're pulling bodies out of the Potomac. The plane was on final but the helicopter just flew right into it. Something went terribly wrong. Trabic accident or deliberate? Hoping for the former. The one thing I know is that with the current administration, we will get the truth as to what actually happened.

Right now Andrea and I are praying for the families of the survivors. What a terrible, terrible thing to have to experience. Lord God, please wrap your arms around each and every family member and friend who tonight is in shock, mourning the loss of their loved ones.:pray:

Praying for the families of the crash victims and all involved.

A large-scale search and rescue mission is in progress after a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet collided in midair near Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, on Wednesday evening.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, operating as American Airlines Flight 5342, was on approach to Runway 33 at around 9 p.m. local time when it made contact with a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The flight had originated from Wichita, Kansas. Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash or any casualties, reports Fox.

Expert puts onus on FAA for American Airlines, helicopter crash: 'Bad management' is 'putting us at risk'

As more than 60 people are feared dead following a tragic midair plane collision over Ronald Reagan National Airport, one aviation expert is sending a "wake-up call" to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

"It's our system that is bad and that's what has to be looked at. To be honest with you… we need to take a bulldozer to the front of the FAA. This is bad management, and it's putting us at risk," Boyd Group International President Mike Boyd said in reaction on "Mornings with Maria," Thursday.

"This is a problem we have with air traffic control. Mr. Duffy has to do something about this," he continued. "We messed around with air traffic control for 30 years. Now we have deaths in the Potomac because of it. So this is a wake-up call for the new administration, which means, fix the FAA and fix it soon before more people die."

The Army told Fox News Digital that the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was "from Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion, out of Davison Army Airfield, Fort Belvoir" and was conducting a "training flight." They were a "fairly experienced" crew and reportedly had night vision googles aboard the helicopter.

As federal investigators prepare to review communications between the two aircraft, Boyd expanded on how the FAA holds the majority of responsibility for the crash.

It appears that the Blackhawk intentionally flew into the passenger plane.
Anything is possible, but I think intentional is not likely. The controllers should of made sure the helo was at the right altitude because they had to be flying well below the standard corridor of flight - especially when flying right by the edge of the airfield runway.

Sad event, the airplane was just seconds from touching down on the runway.
