Analyzing 2 Peter 3:9

1LoverofGod

Well-known
"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance"
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV

I must have read this verse "umpteen" times and more recently I have pondered on it to gain understanding of what exactly it means.

The more the world gets wicked, it has no doubt brought some believers to ask, "what's taking so long? How much is God going to allow us as believers to see and feel of this increasing wickedness and what seems like the world in it's groaning is also falling apart as seen in increasing natural disasters.

All of what we see of course fall in line with what Jesus described as "birth pangs", as cited in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21.

No doubt we are seeing these "birth pangs" in their early beginnings, before The Day of The Lord falls upon the entire earth, as Jesus said would take place

5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Matthew 24:5-11 KJV

No doubt we can see much of this description even now, and as "birth pangs" we have been watching the increase in intenseness and frequency.

But note the end of verse 6

"see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet."

So while we are seeing and feeling these "birth pangs" increasing in intensity and frequency, we keep in mind that
The End is Not Yet.

So, what exactly is meant by
2 Peter 3:9?

I use to think it meant that God is waiting to begin The Day of The Lord, The Tribulation of Judgement, because He is waiting In Case some May repent and turn to Him by believing in Jesus and accept His Salvation invitation.

The more I pondered on the cited verse of this thread title, it became clear to me that it's Not that God is giving more time, In Case more repent and come to Christ to be saved.

What it means is that He's waiting on Those who "He Knows"are coming to repentance and receive Jesus salvation invitation, Not In Case more might be saved.

Because God knows the hearts of men, and God is All knowing, He Already knows who haven't yet been "formally" saved and sealed, but Will come to Christ because God knows in advance who they are.
These are the ones God's waiting on.

Let's examine some scripture. As I quote scripture that helps understand what God's waiting actually means, I want to just revisit some encouraging verses to keep up our spirits in these increasing wicked days.

All of Psalm 139. I will just use verse 16

"Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be."

“Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure"
Isaiah 46:9-10

"Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them."
Isaiah 42:9

"And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen"
Acts 1:24
4" even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us[a] for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will"
Ephesians 1:4-5
"For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers".
Romans 8:29
"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you"
John 15:16

"But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace"
Galatians 1:15

"But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory"
1 Corinthians 2:7

"All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out"
John 6:37
9 "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

27My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand."
John 10:6, 27-28

"Though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls"
Romans 9:11
I wanted to cite these verses to point out that God sent Jesus to save the whole world (John 3:16).
The Door of Salvation, Who is Jesus Himself, is open for Anyone wishing to enter.
The fact that The Chosen have been preordained since before the foundation of the world, doesn't mean God only permits a certain class of people for salvation. This is shown in God's choosing Israel as His people, yet has grafted in the Gentiles to His covenant with them.
Predestination of God's chosen for salvation and purpose for Jesus' Church Body of believers means that because God is All knowing, He foreknew, in advance, who would accept His salvation plan in Jesus even before the Genesis 3:15 prophecy about Jesus being The solution to the fall of man to reconcile us with God.
God's foreknowledge of who would answer to Jesus voice calling for salvation is what made believers sealed before Creation, before the beginning of time, before the end of age would come.
It's this foreknowledge of God that has Him long suffering in His waiting for those who Still are going to repent and come to Him by accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance"
2 Peter:3:9

God knows The beginning and the end.
By Jesus giving signs to look for that would mark the days of his coming at the end of age, in answer to that question by his disciples in Matthew 24:3, is so loving on God's part so that we, who have been sealed and will be Raptured before judgement comes, because we are not appointed to God's Wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9), and is why we take head to Jesus words to be Ready, for His glorious appearing (Matthew 24:44, Titus 2:13).

However, We don't know the day or the hour, nor do we know who God already knows will be saved. So, we who have already received salvation by God's Grace thru Faith, continue to be busy about the Father's business, and plant those seeds to draw Jesus Sheep into the sheepfold.

"Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
Luke 19:13
Satan is working overtime to try to disrupt our commission of Matthew 28:19-20, so more than ever we want to depend on The Lord to give us all the weapons and tools to fight against the tactics of the Wicked one, by letting The Holy Spirit, Who is in us, to direct us, keeping suited up in the Full Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17), being watchful for Jesus coming, and keeping in fellowship with one another for encouragement and edifying of one another, (Hebrews 10:25), so that when the Day comes we stand before the Lord we hear Him say....
‘Well done, good and faithful servant! "
Matthew 25:24

"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong"
1 Corinthians 16:13

"You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability"
2 Peter 3:17
"Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 8:37-39

"Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near"
Luke 21:28

Jesus is coming and will not delay. He will keep His promise to take us before Judgement begins upon the entire Earth.

"For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”
Hebrews 10:37

"In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also."
John 14:2-3

"Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth"
Revelation 3:10
"Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality"
1 Corinthians 15:51-53
"Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord."
1 Thessalonians 4:17
"For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God"
2 Corinthians 1:20
I love Paul's words

"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us"
Romans 8:18
Standing by the Word of God is the source of our hope.
Romans 15:4)
(God's Word gives us the salvation story of Jesus, The Word of God. The Bible is The Word of God (Hebrews 4:12 )and Jesus is The Word of God. (John 1:1).
Please forgive my lengthy thread. But, as I shared my understanding of 2 Peter 3:9, I wanted to include God's promises for His chosen as believers in Christ Jesus by our faith in Jesus finished work on the cross and our Blessed Hope, soon to come.

God bless you all and let's keep looking up, and not be weighed down by this fallen world.
Jesus is our strength.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"
Philippians 4:13

He will never leave us nor forsake us. (Deuteronomy 31:8)

"Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
(Matthew 28:20)

I guess the bottom line of my understanding of the verse is that God is All knowing and knows in advance who is going to repent and seek Him and receive His Son Jesus as Lord and Savior and it is these who God is waiting on in His Long Suffering because many who have been called don't even know they have been called and have been slow to responding to The Shepherd's voice.

We who have been commissioned to spread the Gospel have the responsibility of planting the seeds of salvation that stirs The hearts of those who belong to Jesus and move them to follow Jesus.

Those with the good soil are His and will receive the Word and will produce good fruit, as described in the parable of the sower.

"As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."
Matthew 13:8 😊

If I understand you correctly, God looked through the corridors of time, and seeing who will come,….these that will come are those who He is patiently waiting for? If that be the case, what of God’s sovereignty?

If He had to look and see who would come, God is just reacting and directing the last day to man’s decisions.

How would you see verses like theses (this is only 2 of many)

I form light and create darkness;
I make well-being and create calamity;
I am the LORD, who does all these things.
“Shower, O heavens, from above,
and let the clouds rain down righteousness;
let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;
let the earth cause them both to sprout;
I the LORD have created it.
“Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,
a pot among earthen pots!
Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
or ‘Your work has no handles’? Isaiah 45:7-9

The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the LORD. Prob 16:33

It’s refreshing to hear this truth.

Matthew 13:8 😊
And thinking the soil was prepared for the seed is breathtaking

I do realize some say, by God letting man decide is God being soverigne making the choice to allow such.

In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, Eph 1:11

The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the LORD. Prob 16:33

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

For it is My Father's will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (John 6:40)

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whosoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. (John 11:25)

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. (Mark 8:35-35)

And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let him that heareth say, “Come.” And let him that is athirst come; and whosoever will, let him take the Water of Life freely. (Revelation 22:17)

👍

It’s refreshing to hear this truth.

And thinking the soil was prepared for the seed is breathtaking
God is Omniscient and knows the beginning and the end of all things. I would think that God foreknew that the man on the cross next to Jesus would be saved because God looks within the deep hearts of men and knows who will repent and accept the sacrifice of His Son.

If God didn't know who would be saved and patiently wait on them, it would take His Omniscience from Him.

God is Just and is Merciful to anyone who is "willing" to receive His Grace through faith in Jesus.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God
Ephesians 2:8

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God
Romans 10:17

We cannot know a person's heart so we do what we have been commissioned to do, to take the Gospel to all the world and bring in Jesus sheep into the sheepfold because many of us do not know we are His until we Hear the Gospel of Salvation.

"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
Romans 10:14-15

How wonderful is Our God that He is long suffering and patient and even when we ourselves don't know our calling, God knows and waits for us to answer that call and follow Jesus.

"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me"
John 10:27

God is Omniscient and knows the beginning and the end of all things.
Of course. God is not subject to time whatsoever, so He can operate in a dimension that we cannot comprehend. He can see the beginning from the end and everywhere in between at all times.
I would think that God foreknew that the man on the cross next to Jesus would be saved because God looks within the deep hearts of men and knows who will repent and accept the sacrifice of His Son.
Yes, but in consideration of the verses I gave, would you say God knows (because He foresees) it was the man’s decision or did he decide because of God causing a change?

Text:
The plans of the heart belong to man,
but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. Prob 16:1

If man is preordained by God to be saved or not, then where does that leave this passage-

"“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.' Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? ‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’ Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.'"(Matthew 25: 31-46 NASB1995, emphasis mine)

Regardless of when this judgment takes place, the Lord makes it clear in this passage that Hell was created for the devil and his angels. If the Lord had selected people from the beginning to be saved or not, then they would also have been included in the description of whom hell was created for: "‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels and all those I have not chosen from the beginning for my kingdom' "

Since the Bible never says that, then we can know for certain that the Lord may know who will be saved, but He doesn't actively assign them to salvation or damnation.

And as far as I'm concerned, that settles it.

... the Lord may know who will be saved, but He doesn't actively assign them to salvation or damnation.
Exactly. God's foreknowledge does not equate to predestination. And the totality of Scripture demonstrates that His giving those created in His image the freedom of choice does not equate to a loss of His sovereignty. In fact giving us that freedom of choice is actually an act of His sovereignty.

That God can do that is totally beyond our comprehension. But oh! how awesome is He that has indeed done that! How much greater than a god who, like us, has to maintain control over everything under him or lose his sovereignty over it! Glory, glory, glory to the Lord God Almighty!!!

For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.' I don't believe God selects who will be saved, but He knows who will come to Christ and be saved before we know, because He knows the beginning from the end.

God's foreknowledge of who will be saved, doesn't mean He preselected them, just that He knows in advance who's going to willfully choose to be saved through His Son Jesus.

God always gives us the choice.
If we reject the Son, God will reject us.

Exactly.

Prob 16:33

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord ((When God uses the words “our Lord”, in what condition are those addressed? They are already born-again Christians! It is very important to understand this now, because it makes it clear that no unbelieving sinners have been chosen by God. This can be understood by anyone who reads God's Word carefully and really does not want to go beyond the Scriptures and does not want to rely on human theories that are built on sand)) Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in Christ; ((the words “in Christ” are the second proof that Christians are meant here and not unbelieving sinners!)), according as he has chosen us in him ((the words “in him” now confirm for a third time that this is referring to born-again Christians and not to unsaved, notborn-again sinners)) before the world’s foundation, ((The Father knew before the foundation of the world on the basis of his omniscience who would be IN CHRIST, i.e. who would be the body of his beloved Son Jesus Christ, who is the head of the body. Conclusion: The Father has chosen this body with head (=Jesus), but not unbelieving sinners!)) that we should be holy and blameless before him in love; ((TO WHAT did the Father choose Christians? For salvation? NO, that is not written in Ephesians, because Christians are already saved. It is no longer about the salvation of Christians when the Father chooses the body and the head, but about Christians being holy and blameless before him in love)); having marked us out beforehand for adoption ((The second blessing of Christians is sonship. Sonship is a special privilege whereby we will later inherit and reign with Christ, but not in this life, this only comes after the rapture!)) through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he has taken us into favour in the Beloved: in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of offences, according to the riches of his grace; which he has caused to abound towards us in all wisdom and intelligence, having made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in himself for the administration of the fulness of times; to head up all things in the Christ, the things in the heavens and the things upon the earth; in him, in whom we have also obtained an inheritance, being marked out beforehand according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his own will, that we should be to the praise of his glory ((The text should be read several times. It is not written that sinners were chosen before the world for salvation. It is written that Christians were chosen before the world to certain blessings and services in Christ. Of course, Christians are also redeemed by the blood of Jesus - but they are not elected to this - that is the subtle difference!)) who have pre-trusted in the Christ: in whom ye also have trusted, having heard the word of the truth, the glad tidings of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, ye have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, ((The order of our salvation is clearly defined: 1. hear the word of truth 2. the sinner must place all his hope in Jesus alone 3. only then comes the new birth = sealing with the Holy Spirit)) who is the earnest of our inheritance to the redemption of the acquired possession to the praise of his glory.

We find that according to Eph 1.3-14:

a) born-again Christians have been chosen by the Father for ministries/services and blessings
b) but no unbelieving sinners were chosen for salvation.

God may know before we do, whether we will choose to accept His Son as our Lord and Savior, but He still expects us to be the one's to choose.
God loves us so much that He even draws us to His Son, by hearing The Gospel, when He knows we are seeking Him.

"I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live"
Deuteronomy 30:19

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:44

Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near
