Geologist shares analysis of Hamas's use of underground tunnels with NHK
A geologist who has been studying underground tunnels in the Gaza Strip says the Islamic group Hamas has diversified strategies using the tunnels to counter the Israeli military.Professor Joel Roskin at Bar-Ilan University in Israel shared his analysis in an interview with NHK.
Roskin said he estimates that the network of tunnels goes as deep as 70 meters, which is equivalent to a 20-story building. His estimate is based on research as part of an Israeli military investigation team and a sketch of underground tunnels created using information from authorities and other sources.
He said the tunnels are estimated to be 300 to 500 kilometers long, but their exact total length is not known.
