It's just that there are enough tremblors in SoCal that natives don't really notice them unless they're more powerful.

The reason the 5.2 from last week made news headlines was because of how many aftershocks there were afterwards. Over 450.
There's seismic activity in California every day. Most of the time around 1 to 3 magnitude and no one notices them. The 5.2 was noticable, it rocked Dodger Stadium.
The 4.4 was likely an aftershock.
