‘Forever Canadian’ petition surpasses goal, collects 456K signatures

EDMONTON – A former deputy premier of Alberta says the success of a petition he circulated to make it official policy for the province to stay in Canada should signal to Premier Danielle Smith that she needs to put separatism to bed.

Thomas Lukaszuk says his petition has collected more than 456,000 signatures — smashing the province’s 294,000 signature-threshold required to initiate a possible referendum.

“(Those) 456,365 Albertans have said that they don’t want anything to do with separatism,” Lukaszuk said during a news conference Tuesday, where he stood in front of a wall of 61 stacked boxes full of signed petitions.

“We’re asking our premier to do the right thing and Alberta MLAs to vote on this issue and put separatism to bed once and for all.”

So, a little under half a million Alberans want to remain in Canada. Is it fair to presume the remainder don't?
LOL knowing my country, the answer is nope, the rest were too unbothered by the whole thing to sign.

Petitions in Canada demand a LOT of personal info including email addresses that open a person up to all kinds of political fundraising and other annoyances.

Even when Canucks feel passionate (we don't actually get fired up that much) we don't usually do a lot of petitions.

That said the fact that a province with just over 5 million people including babies, children and teenagers who aren't eligible to vote or sign petitions means that it had a very active turnout for that petition.

Alberta had 2.3 million voters according to CBC this spring. Record turn out. That says that a little less than 1/4 of them were concerned enough to sign a petition to stay in Canada.

Which means that at least double that were in agreement but weren't about to share their email, street addresses and other info like name on some petition handed around by who knows who.

So far I haven't seen any actual petition demanding to leave Canada. And again that suggests that not enough people care passionately about leaving.

Like I said, we just don't like to sign petitions up here. So for that many to sign on to stay in Canada suggests that the support to leave isn't there.

Not saying there isn't some. Alberta and Quebec have always been the two top centres for leaving Confederation.
